She took the raffle ticket from his fingertips and held it gently in her smooth-skinned, alabaster hands.

I, on the other hand, grasped the raffle ticket in my hand. “The roses are mine,” I chanted silently conjuring, not wanting anyone to hear my incantation.

I waited in anticipation for him to call out the winning number.  “Number 700025,” he shouted to the waiting audience.

That’s not my number…How can this be?  I thought to myself. There was a hush in the room.

“No one claims the roses…draw again, please.” He motioned to the tall, thin, elegant older lady in a red satin hat holding the pink basket of raffle tickets.

The roses are mine! I whispered the mantra to myself, knowing truly I had been given a sign from the universe. It must be a little glitch in my stream. I felt the perspiration drip down the side of my little black dress as I clutched that ticket to my heart. I closed my eyes, pursing my lips in excitement, preparing to go on stage to receive my red roses. I knew I would win. I had to. I am the queen of the human fairies in my world.

The matron in a red satin hat pulled out another raffle tickets and handed it to the elf MC.

“Number 7008…”

I stood up in my excitement, “Yes. They’re mine!” I waited to hear the last two numbers. preparing to go on stage.

“….81.”

Snow White, who had no program to start, stood up next to me and floated up the aisle toward the stage to receive MY RED ROSES!

“We have a winner!”
